What simple things can we do for others that will change the world, and why do we fear to do them?

 In Australia
if planned recommendation are implemented, they would create an oppressive regime of esentially government-controlled media and overturn our cherished principle of freedom of the press.
They would in essence create a 'licensing' of every media agency and even more disturbingly most websites and blogs, with more that 41 hits a day.

Here, in Australia, we have become far too accustomed to surrender our freedoms without protest.

But do ordinary Australians really care about this regulation?

a threat to free speech and to all media, big and small, doesn't get our attention at all?

The community should be an effective and immediate arbiter of what is considered acceptible

rather than handing that responsibility to the Government.

As a society we know that free speech like any other right, also comes with certain responsibilities.

It is a gradual thing.

Bit by bit, we are guided down the politically correct path.

And we won't realize what we have lost until it's gone.

The danger of staying silent, even if, just for now, can put many people in danger...now and in the future...

The free speech is not actually 'free'.

It is maintained by a vigilant citizenry prepared to question political orthodoxy.

Telling the truth and uncover the inconvenient truth

are they really the simple things
we can do
to change the world?

Countries
like China,
Cuba
or Russia,
with its rigid
centralised
dictatorship,
punitive
social
policies
and
lack of openness
to other cultures
cannot yet
be any match
for America
where everyone
have right
to say
what they think,
or are they?

The powerhouse of ideas
of the first
immigrant
culture,
it absorbs
everything
and throws it back
out
to be reabsorbed
by the rest
of the world.
Its diversity,
richness
and unbeatable self-esteem:
'Americans can do anything,
but can they protect
their own freedom of speech?'

The politicisation
of our everyday conversation,
of our behaviour
and our culture
too influenced
by social attitudes,
too judgmental
about the values
to scarred
to offend
someone's sentiment
somewhere
makes it difficult
to think of
opinion
of art
as important
in its own right.

The humiliation,
degradation
of Muslims
by the allegedly
crusading West.
“These are intensely personal feelings,
you are attacking,”
said one of the extremists,
showing
no interest
in the politics
of needs,
thoughts
and ideas,
but rather
in a world
of moral
sentiment.

The humiliation,
degradation
of ethnic minorities
by the allegedly
latte-sipping Westerners.
“These are intensely personal feelings,
you are attacking,”
said one of the protesters,
showing
no interest
in the discussion
on equality,
but rather
in a world
of moral
sentiment.

The humiliation,
degradation
of women,
gay men,
environmentalists,
idealists
and anyone
we need to defend
from the allegedly
traditional,
old-fashioned,
close-minded
men.

It is our time
to use our right
of free speech
to make
140-character
expression of rage
against anyone
and anything
that offends
our sensitivities,
from the comfort
of our beds.
Is it really
the truth,
we are defending?

Easterners,
Westerners,
Middle East
men...
anyone
who offends
our feelings
in any way,
and yet,
our own press
and journalists
are under constant scrutiny
to present 'the modified truth'
or hide the truth
if convenient.

It is essential
for our press
to be given
greater power
to safeguard freedom
of expression
through
the public interest defence.
There is a difference
between
what is interesting to public
and something
in which the public
has a stake.
Reports of criminal activity,
threats to national
and local security,
corruption,
dishonesty and hypocrisy.
Ethical wrongdoing
and the true behaviour
of institutions and individuals
of power and influence.
Fight for the freedom of speech
in undeveloped countries
but do not forget to question
your own right.
“ Can you rely on the information
from your daily paper,
to make more informed
decisions
about your daily life?”
